The 2008-2010 Aflatoun Campaign is a two-year campaign to bring the Aflatoun Programme to 1 million children in 75 countries by the end of 2010. The Aflatoun Programme aims to equip these 1 million children with life skills to break the cycle of poverty and become empowered children and changemakers in their homes and communities. On 17th March 2008, Aflatoun’s global Campaign for Child Social & Financial Education was launched in Amsterdam by HRH Princess Maxima (2005 UN Ambassador for Microfinance), Tom Miller (Executive Director of Plan International), Yanghee Lee (Chair of the UNCRC), and Fazle Abed (Executive Director of BRAC International).
The July 5-7th Mid-Campaign Meeting in Cairo, Egypt marks the middle of this two-year campaign. It will bring together Aflatoun’s global movement of children, educators, civil society organizations, governments, and private sector partners to evaluate the state of Aflatoun programmes worldwide and plan the road ahead to 2010. Chaired by Egypt’s First Lady H.E. Suzan Mubarak, the Cairo 2009 meeting is being co-hosted by Aflatoun’s Programme partner in Egypt, the Ministry of State for Family and Population Affairs, a government ministry led by the First Lady. Over the 3-day meeting participants will not only learn about the Aflatoun Programme in Egypt by interacting with Egypt’s Aflatoun children during their own Children’s Meeting on July 7th, but
will also have a chance to learn from Aflatoun’s 22 global Programmes through exhibits and panel presentations. Delegates from Aflatoun implementing organizations, as well as private, public and civil society partners will all be there to share, learn, and interact.
The objectives of this Mid-Campaign Meeting are to mark the progress of Aflatoun’s Programmes across the globe, examine similar interventions in children and youth financial literacy and financial services, while strengthening the Aflatoun Network. The meeting will also provide a platform for sharing of lessons learned and best practices, while forming cross-sector partnerships among representatives from governments, financial institutions and international
organizations.
Expected attendees include high-level representatives from the UNCRC, UNICEF, World Savings Banks Institute, Plan International, Amnesty International, Opportunity International, BRAC, Ernst & Young, and central banks, ministries of education and finance, and many others!
