Powering Connections: The 2008 SEEP Annual Conference -- What did you learn this year?Participation: does it help or hinder pro-poor market development

Hi
We are interested in a workshop on participation to achieve pro-poor impacts at scale.
Below are some thoughts on the workshop content. Is anyone else interested in this and would you like to join us?
thanks
Alison (Practical Action)

Promoting participation of a wide range of market stakeholders to make markets work better for the poor can be a contentious area. At one extreme some may consider participation to be a resource-heavy distraction from the real business of getting bi-lateral commercial transactions going. Whilst at the other end of the spectrum some agencies embed it deeply as a “principle” in their approach regardless of its effectiveness in producing lasting results. This workshop will explore these issues by considering a space for participation called Multi-stakeholder Forums. The interactive discussion will be informed by three case studies that draw on field based learning from Peru, Nepal and Sudan. How participation and, specifically Multi-stakeholder Forums, can help to achieve lasting sustainable change for the benefit of large numbers of poor producers, and not just a “lucky few” will be at the heart of the session.

Panel Topic - Looking for more folks
1:23pm - Jul 8, 2008

Hi colleagues,

we are looking to put together a panel for the SEEP NETWORK AGM on HR issues, particularly to address high growth issues for MFIs, recruiting/keeping talented young people, morale, and management. There are clearly lots of examples in our industry, but many challenges.

We have a private sector specialist in start-ups who will join us. We’d like 1 or 2 MFIs in the field or others in North America who can bring specific information to this topic as we facilitate a discussion on the topic and point out best practices and successes.
